Our PhD student Ze Scales (under supervision of Dr. Michael Stöger-Pollach) wins the Infineon Austria Innovation Award 2024 - Best PhD Topic with her dissertation project "Unravelling the Mysterious Atomic Behavior of Dislocations in GaN". The aim of this project was to find out why some dislocations are conductive and others are not. The crystallographic description of the dislocations alone is not sufficient; the decoration with foreign atoms must also be taken into account. For this purpose, FIB lamellae containing electrically characterised dislocations were prepared and analysed in the TEM using EELS and CL. It is easy to imagine that this is no easy task, considering that the dislocation density is around 1 million dislocations per cm2.

Infineon Austria and USTEM congratulate!
