By awarding the KFV Research Prize, the Austrian Road Safety Board (KFV) would like to bring research enthusiasts before the curtain who creatively and ambitiously develop new solutions for more safety in everyday life. The goals are to publicize innovative ideas and to promote the practical implementation of the best ideas. The search was on for innovative approaches to solutions, sustainable prevention measures and/or effective products/projects for accident prevention or harm avoidance. The scientific works submitted were evaluated by an independent, international jury of experts.
Alexander L. Gratzer was awarded 1st place in the KFV Research Prize 2022 for his ongoing dissertation in the course of the FFG research project Intelligent Intersection.
The aim of Alexander's work is to combine state-of-the-art information, communication, and control concepts in order to make urban intersections more efficient and, above all, safer. The focus is on Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs), e.g., pedestrians, bicyclists, or scooter riders, who are at particular risk of being injured or killed in traffic.
Some use cases include prediction of collisions and traffic rule violations, detection of hazardous locations, reconfiguration of traffic control after a detected accident, and intersection as an information hub for networked traffic participants and traffic planners. Initial results in this regard have already been published in international conference- and journal publications.
"Due to the upcoming networking of road users among each other as well as vehicle automation, completely new possibilities will arise in the future in the individual control and regulation of the individual road users, which require novel control methods and concepts so that the passage of an intersection becomes more efficient, safer and more comfortable at the same time. The Intelligent Intersection project deals exactly with these new control concepts. On the part of ANDATA we are pleased that the high innovation content of this project as well as the achievements of young researchers find a general and public appreciation by the award of the prize to Alexander L. Gratzer from our long-time project partner of the TU Wien."
