The MountResilience project from the Horizon Europe research programme supports European mountain regions in improving their ability to adapt to climate change. As part of the project, flagship projects are being developed and tested that combine technological, nature-based and socially innovative solutions.

Over the past 12 months, the Urban and Regional Research department has analysed each region for the current status quo of its adaptation and finalised the resulting regional profiles at the end of August, which will support the implementation of the planned projects.

The fact that the regions have a high awareness of the need for climate change adaptation, but only 2 of the 10 regions analysed have a dedicated regional strategy for climate change adaptation, is just one of many exciting findings that the researchers came across. The majority of the analysed strategies, instruments and projects in the regions strive for gradual and reactive rather than transformative adaptation and focus on measures in (political) governance as well as better involvement and education of the population.

Part of the analysis was also the development of recommendations for the respective regions, which include, for example, the development of a clear vision or better networks for the exchange of knowledge in the respective region.

The final report will now be reviewed and then published.
