Vehicles powered by PEM fuel cells offer a long range and short refuelling times. Development engineers are faced with the challenge of optimising fuel conversion efficiency and service life while reducing material and manufacturing costs.

A critical parameter is the service life of the PEM fuel cell. In order to optimise this, the FFG-funded project ‘PEMLife’ was launched together with AVL and PM Fuel Cells Power systems. The main partners of TU Wien are the Institute for Powertrains and Automotive Technology, the Institute of Mechatronics and USTEM. Dr. Sabine Schwarz is responsible for the electron microscopic investigations.
