For some time now, digitalization has not just affected an organisation's IT division. It now extends to almost all business divisions, and is even changing entire organisations and their business models due to the digital transformation. But this also means that an organisation's workforce needs to evolve as well and develop digital skills in areas where it wasn't even on the agenda just a few years ago. Managers at all levels in particular need to develop at least a basic knowledge of relevant specialist topics to enable them to assess developments that are relevant to the market and make informed decisions.

Managers learning to lead the digital transformation

The Executive Course 'Digital Transformation Manager' offered by the Continuing Education Center at TU Wien provides an insight into technical knowledge that currently prevails in the field of digitalization in four module blocks, each lasting two days. Experts from the field and research address the issues put forward by participants from their companies, thus giving them the tools to implement or support digital projects and change processes in their own organisation. The course covers both organisational challenges of digital transformation and how to handle data structures and the Internet of Things (IoT), not forgetting topics relating to security, data protection and general legislation. Ultimately, participants should be able to identify and develop digital opportunities in their organisations, support innovative product development and even develop this into a new business model.

DTM Digitalization Lab: digitalization in practice explained

Theory is good, practice is better. Such is the basic idea behind the 'DTM Digitalization Lab' course module, which was hosted by TU.it, opens an external URL in a new window and the TU Wien .digital office in the Collaboration Room. Leading the module was Bernd Logar, Head of TU.it, opens an external URL in a new window, an expert with many years of practical experience, who walked participants through the opportunities offered by a digitalization laboratory in an organisation. Based on an end-to-end process, participants were able to test how to implement a digitalization laboratory. The participants, most of whom do not work in IT departments, were given the task of setting up a digitalization lab for cloud data analytics. To begin with, a sensor had to be connected to an IoT hub so that the data collected by the sensor could be processed and then sent to the cloud. After adjusting the IoT hub so that it could access the sensor's data, an application had to be set up to capture and display the incoming data. This could then be used to compile reports. Using machine learning not only made it possible to interpret and present data from the present, it also enabled the system to make predictions for future developments based on historic values. Finally, the connection to a logic app enabled alerts to be sent when limits are exceeded.

The DTM Digitalization Lab in particular, but also the Executive Course in general, show how important it is for today's executives and managers to at least be able to take part in conversations about technological developments.
