In recent decades, entropy methods became an indispensable tool for the analysis of diffusion equations and their systems. The methods provide physics-inspired informations about the solutions to diffusion problems. In his dissertation on “Applications of entropy methods for nonlinear diffusion systems”, Dr. VETTER has developed further mathematical tools and in this way extended the class of entropy methods. On the one hand, Dr. Vetter investigated two approximations of a diffusion system that describes the segregation of different populations, namely a numerical second-order approximation in time and a nonlocal approximation using an elliptic equation. On the other hand, Dr. Vetter has analyzed a variant of the drift-diffusion equations for memristors, which are particularly suitable for the case of large electron densities. What is remarkable about his work is the mathematical-technical effort and the combination of various modern analytical techniques. The thesis was reviewed by Dr. Marianne BESSEMOULIN (Nancy) and Dr. Antoine ZUREK (Compiègne). We wish him every success for his future career!
