A record-breaking 43 participants took part in this year's Franz Viehböck Poster Session, which was held at the Institute of Applied Physics on 9 December 2024. For the first time in the history of the prize, there was also a poster introduction in addition to the poster session itself, in which all participants had one and a half minutes to briefly present their poster to the audience. This event was at least as well attended as the posters afterwards - there was almost no free space to be found in lecture hall 7!

The event was characterised by many inspiring conversations with young scientists who spoke enthusiastically about their work. This made it all the more difficult to decide on the winners later on. However, after a long discussion by the jury, Victoria Vojtech (134-03) emerged as the clear winner. This year's recognition prizes went to Faith Lewis (134-05, 1st recognition prize) and Arun Ravi (134-04, 2nd recognition prize). The 3rd recognition prize was shared by Florian Simperl (135-03), Nail Barama (134-05) and David Stockinger (134-06). The prizes were presented at this year's Christmas party by Franz and Carina Viehböck, son and granddaughter of Franz Viehböck.

If you missed the poster session, you may have missed a great Institute-wide event, but you still have a whole year to marvel at the work of our young scientists: the posters will hang in the display cases of the Institute in the Freihaus on all floors (3rd, 4th and 5th floors in the red and yellow areas, as well as on the 8th floor in the yellow area) until the next poster session in winter 2024.

Franz Viehböck Poster Prize

The Franz Viehböck Poster Prize has been awarded at the Institute of Applied Physics every year since 2019 as part of the Institute's Christmas party. Master's students and doctoral students in the first two years of their doctorate are invited to create a poster about their work and present it to interested members of staff at the Institute during a poster session. A jury consisting of one representative from each working group will then select the winning poster. The prize money is intended for the mobility of young scientists and is endowed with 1500€ (1st place) and 500€ each for three recognition prizes.
