The Federal Office of Metrology and Surveying (BEV) manages the Austrian gravity database and is working on its densification and updating. The database contains gravity data from past OMV measurement campaigns conducted in the 1960s and 1970s, comprising approximately 3350 stations with measured gravity values. These stations are predominantly arranged in a regular grid covering a contiguous area in Lower Austria. This study investigates whether the historical OMV data can be used for current research-relevant applications, such as the determination of geopotential heights, gravity field modelling, geoid determination, and the calculation of gravity anomalies. For quality assessment, comparative measurements were carried out in a test area comprising 1042 measurement stations across four ÖK50 map sheets in the Weinviertel region of Lower Austria. Based on these data, the historical datasets were analysed by determining gravity anomalies using the method proposed by Zahorec et al. (2021). The main challenges include topographic changes over the past decades as well as the quality of the historical data. However, the results show that the historical data meet the required accuracy of <± 1 mGal. It can therefore be concluded that the data from the OMV measurement campaigns are suitable for further research-relevant applications.
