Waste - Prevention and Recycling: A Topic for Science

Nikolaus Geyrhalter's latest film, "Matter Out Of Place" (NGF - Nikolaus Geyrhalter Filmproduktion - Matter Out of Place, opens an external URL in a new window) is centered around the issue of waste in our society. The film depicts landscapes of plastic and styrofoam, towering heaps of garbage, and oceans polluted with plastics. Additionally, the film follows individuals in their work of collecting, incinerating, crushing, and repurposing waste.

For a University of Technology, waste is also a highly relevant topic. Solutions for recycling and circular economy are developed here, researching whether and how waste can become a resource to reduce the pressure on natural resources.

Following the film presentation, the scientists Vasiliki-Maria Archodoulaki, opens a file in a new window (Structural Polymers, TU Wien), Maria Kalleitner-Huber (Sustainability Officer, Mozarteum University Salzburg) and Jakob Lederer , opens a file in a new window(Recycling Technologies and Systems, TU Wien) will discuss with the director the possibilities and challenges of science in shaping the transition to a sustainable and environmentally friendly economy through the circular economy. Heidi Shaar, opens a file in a new window will moderate the Lounge talk.

The film will be shown with English subtitles. The language used for the discussion will be German, but attendees are welcome to ask questions in English.

Participation is free of charge and places are limited. The registration list is full, but the waiting list for the event is open.

We look forward to a fruitful exchange of ideas!

Of Throwing Away and Finding Again - Cultural Change in Arts and Science on June 6, 5:30 pm (advance registration required

The French word for garbage "Im-mond-ices" points to a particular aspect of throwing away: objects change their meaning over time, possibly becoming things that no longer fit into our world (monde), that we no longer want to have, that no longer serve us, and that we want to dispose of and forget.

This individualized perspective overlooks that subjective attribution of value and meaning is also deeply rooted in cultural norms. In our Lounge talk, we will explore (and learn about) the exciting questions of stigmatizing waste, overcoming dominant aesthetic codes, and the persistence and re-creation of identities through waste as a resource with our great guests from the arts, culture, and sciences. We explore the question of how, above all, (re)finding can become a new cultural technique that also cares for a planet in crisis.

In the TUesday Lounge, we welcome the writer Arno Geiger, who will read from his book „Das Glückliche Geheimnis", Andrea Kessler & Peter Kneidinger from materialnomaden, and the architect Alexander Hagner from gaupenraub! We look forward to an exciting evening about throwing away and finding again.
