Catalysis Research
The creation of the vast majority of manufactured products encountered in modern life is made possible by catalysis. From energy to healthcare, and from plastics and fertilisers, catalysis is ubiquitously involved in their production chains. Catalysis allows for the ability to increase the rate of a reaction, or to produce products under milder conditions, which makes otherwise unfeasible reactions viable. As society transitions into a more sustainable world and the imperative to reach net-zero increases, catalysis will play a crucial role. The utilisation of CO2 as a feedstock, the production of biofuels and the conversion of waste plastics into valuable products, are all challenges that catalysis can help us overcome.
In the Research Group for Applied Solid State Chemistry at TU Wien, we aim to perform rigorous research of technical catalyst and reaction systems to tackle societies most pressing issues. Through the use of advanced characterisation and operando studies at synchrotron facilities, in combination with reaction testing on bespoke lab-scale reactor set-ups, we can generate high-quality information about catalytic systems. Through developing a detailed understanding of different facets of catalytic systems, such as structure-function relationships, kinetic analysis and deactivation studies, we can design practical solutions that delivers ‘technology for people’.
