Cartography (Master)
The international Master's Programme Cartography is offered jointly by four universities. Every student must complete one semester at each of the participating universities, in the following order:
- Technical University of Munich (1st semester)
- TU Wien (2nd semester)
- TU Dresden (3rd semester)
- University of Twente (online-modules in 1st und 3rd semester)
The fourth semester, dedicated to writing your master's thesis, may be spent at any of the three partner universities.
The collaboration between the three partner universities ensures comprehensive coverage of cartographic subject matter. A key element is the communication of spatially referenced information, which is approached from theoretical, scientific and practical perspectives. The curriculum covers the creation of traditional static maps, location-based services, mobile cartography, web cartography and GIS-based geodata generalisation and visualisation.

Programme Structure

During the 1st semester at TUM, the foundations in cartography and geovisualisation are taught. In the 2nd semester at TUW students gain knowledge in multimedia cartography, especially in web mapping, mobile internet and location-based services (LBS). Students specialise in mobile cartography and 3D cartography in the 3rd semester at TUD. During the first and third semester, online modules from the University of Twente are integrated in the curriculum. Students choose one of the four universities where they spend their fourth semester to write their master's thesis.
The curriculum is structured in complementary and consecutive modules. It is based on lectures, exercises, seminars and project works. In the beginning of the 3rd semester, an 11 days alpine field school within the module “Georelief and Cartography” takes place.
Further Information
Admission is possible after completing an eligible Bachelor’s degree at an accredited national or international post-secondary educational institution.This should be in Cartography, Geography, Geodesy, Geo-informatics or another relevant subject, which would of course include the Bachelor's Programme Geodesy and Geoinformation at TU Wien. Please note: In order to meet the qualification requirement, students must demonstrate their eligibility to the Munich University of Technology; this is not possible for new students to enrol at TU Wien as they could for standard national courses. In addition to having an interest in the subject, students must be prepared to travel, as they will need to spend each semester at a different university.

Graduates are skilled specialists with an academic qualification and technical experience. They organise, analyse and model spatial data scientifically and prepare and communicate it through cartography. The fact that the course is taught in English enhances graduates’ ability to pursue international career opportunities. Furthermore, excellent career prospects await graduates, owing to the high demand for qualified professionals in this field.
