
Environmental Engineering (Master)
Current environmental issues such as climate change, air and water pollution, shortage of resources at a time of increasing waste production, and disastrous flooding pose enormous challenges for society, science and technology. There is an increasing demand for experts, whose skills are not limited to the application of a single type of technical solution, but who are able to identify, analyse and solve today’s complex problems in the context of society, the environment and technology.

This master’s programme builds on the foundation laid down by the Bachelor's Programme Environmental Engineering. It offers you an opportunity to specialise in one of the core environmental engineering disciplines. The curriculum comprises modules that aim at broadening your basic knowledge (for example in such fields as geodesy and geoinformation, energy technology, risk assessment, engineering hydrology, resource management, environmental ethics and technological impact assessment), as well as electives enabling you to specialise in two of the following four areas:
- Geodata – acquisition and processing
- Environmental risks – air quality and climate
- Environmental risk – water
- Resource management and sanitary engineering
In addition, the following modules must be completed:
- Elective Modules for Further Specialisation (31.0 ECTS)
- Free Electives and Transferable Skills (9.0 ECTS): Free choice from the range of courses offered by all recognised national and international post-secondary educational institutions, subject to the restriction that at least 4.5 ECTS must be chosen from the subject areas covered by Transferable Skills.
- Master's Thesis (30.0 ECTS)
Further Information
Admission to the Master’s programme in “Environmental Engineering” is possible after completing an eligible Bachelor’s or a Diploma degree at an accredited national or international post-secondary educational institution. To compensate for fundamental subject-specific differences between your previous education and the level of qualifications expected at TU Wien, supplementary examinations totalling a maximum of 30 ECTS credits may be required. These must be taken by the end of the second semester of the Master’s programme.

Graduates of the Master’s programme in Environmental Engineering possess extensive knowledge of the core subjects and a sufficient level of in-depth knowledge in the chosen subject areas of their specialisations. This enables them to communicate effectively with experts from other specialisations within the environmental sector and to apply their specialist knowledge in such a way as to ensure a sustainable, holistic approach. The Master’s programme in Environmental Engineering combines the knowledge profiles of generalists and specialists to foster a new generation of engineers.
Graduates of the Master’s programme in Environmental Engineering are qualified for the following fields of work:
- Applied research and development in the environmental industry, as well as in universities and other research institutions
- Leading positions in environmental projects relating to water management, waste management, resource management, air quality and air pollution control, climate protection, environmental geoinformation and environmental technology, as well as in the public sector
- Environmental officer in a company
- Collection and processing of geodata for various applications in environmental engineering
- Analysis and assessment of environmental risks to air quality and climate, and identification of solutions
- Analysis, assessment and modelling of environmental risks relating to water, from both a quantitative and qualitative perspective, and the identification of potential solutions
- Carrying out conceptual and planning tasks in the field of urban development, water management and resource management
