Bachelor’s Programme Spatial Planning
TU Wien attempts to support prospective students in their decision making phase for their studies, while ensuring the high and internationally recognized quality of their studies and teaching.
As of the winter semester 2019/20, there will be either admission or selection procedures (for bachelor's programmes with limited places) for all bachelor's programmes at TU Wien or a study preparation and reflection phase (PRe phase) for bachelor's programmes without place restrictions.
Course content – why Spatial Planning?
In the recently revised bachelor's programme, students tackle spatial issues in all their geographical, physical and social dimensions. The bachelor's programme extends from the preparation and assimilation of spatial information and its methodical re-casting as knowledge, via the assessment and critical reflection of spatial qualities and demands, through the drafting of spatial concepts and the development of approaches and strategies to their implementation and evaluation.
The formation of communicative planning processes and the creation of the necessary legal certainty surrounding planning are two further significant aspects of spatial planning skills; and the discipline has to take explicit account of social diversity. Because of the many different aspects of spatial planning and the ways it is used, it connects with a number of areas in technology, social and natural sciences. With its aim of coordinating spatial developments and areas of activity, spatial planning as a specialist extracurricular subject has both an explicitly interdisciplinary and a trans-disciplinary role, bringing together as it does a wide range of different participants.
The content and qualifications offered by the bachelor's programme are divided into modules. The bachelor's programme consists of the following 19 modules:
- fifteen compulsory modules worth 143 ECTS credits,
- three optional modules worth a total of 18 ECTS credits, to be selected from a choice of 12 options,
- one free choice module worth 19 ECTS credits.
The bachelor's programme consists of the following examination subjects:
- Social and legal principles,
- Methods and techniques in spatial planning,
- Town and regional planning,
- Instruments of planning and control,
- Spatial planning project – Project I,
- Spatial development planning – Project II,
- General scientific training and
- Bachelor's thesis.
The bachelor's programme in Urban and Regional Planning at TU Wien is the only one of its kind in Austria.
Given the way that the interdisciplinary subject of spatial planning interacts with so many aspects of life, work and the environment, the course prepares students for the many and varied professional options that are available in this field. Work in the area of spatial planning can be found:
- in regional and local development planning in urban and rural environments,
- in town planning, redevelopment and regeneration,
- in traffic, infrastructure and environmental planning,
- in site analysis and evaluation, estate management and project development,
- in economic and structural policy, in town and regional marketing,
- in political and economic consulting and in international development cooperation and
- in spatial research institutes.
Courses in spatial planning take place at the Faculty of Architecture and Planning of TU Wien and specifically at the following institutes:
• The Institute of Urban Design and Landscape Architecture (E260)
• The Department of Spatial Development and Infrastructure & Environmental Planning (E280)
Other institutes of different faculties at TU Wien also provide teaching programmes for these courses.
