Bachelor's Programme Technical Physics
TU Wien attempts to support prospective students in their decision making phase for their studies, while ensuring the high and internationally recognized quality of their studies and teaching.
As of the winter semester 2019/20, there will be either admission or selection procedures (for bachelor's programmes with limited places) for all bachelor's programmes at TU Wien or a study preparation and reflection phase (PRe phase) for bachelor's programmes without place restrictions.

The most important requirement for studying Technical Physics, in addition to meeting the formal entry requirements, is an interest in today’s physical world, fundamental relationships and technical applications. You must able to deal with abstract topics, have a positive attitude towards maths, and a talent for applying knowledge to practice.
The Physics bachelor's programme is based on comprehensive foundational study in the field of physics and its applications. Emphasis is placed on modern physics, such as quantum theory, the theory of relativity, statistical physics and the structure of matter, all of which determine our current understanding of the microcosm and the development of the universe.
Mastering these concepts requires intensive mathematical study in the first three semesters of the bachelor's programme. Modern physics is the basis for a number of technological developments in electronics, nanotechnology, medicine, power engineering, etc. which is why the bachelor's programme includes well-grounded laboratory and electronics study, engineering mechanics and technological subjects in order for students to be able to implement technical concepts. The course includes the following core modules:
- Foundations of Physics with Practical Laboratory Work
- Foundations of Electronics and IT
- Engineering Mechanics
- Theoretical Physics (Electrodynamics, Quantum Theory, Statistical Physics)
- Structure of Matter (Chemistry, Solid State Physics, and Atomic, Nuclear and Particle Physics)
The Engineering Physics bachelor’s programme at TU Wien has approximately 250 first-year students and is not an anonymous mass course. There are currently plenty of excellently equipped practice and laboratory spaces and enough members of staff to ensure that there are no waiting times for laboratory spots. The Faculty of Physics has an internationally recognised research profile with emphases on material research, quantum mechanics and fundamental interactions. One feature of studying physics at TU Wien is that students are involved in ongoing research projects even during the third year of the bachelor's programme. Students are able to take part in international research projects because of the great equipment and current staff/student ratio in the Faculty of Physics.
The bachelor's programme in Technical Physics is intended not as a specific vocational course but rather as a broadly based education in the principles of the subject, providing access to subsequent study in one of the following master's courses:
- E 066 461 Technical Physics
- E 066 460 Physical Energy and Measurement Engineering
- E 066 434 Materials Sciences (cross-faculty)
- E 066 453 Biomedical Engineering (cross-faculty)
In addition, with a few supplementary exams, the bachelor's programme in Technical Physics allows access to a number of other master's courses, particularly in Engineering Sciences.
The bachelor’s programme also provides a sound educational background for careers that build on the basic principles of sustainability. The scope of the foundational knowledge opens up a wide range of activities to graduates, with excellent opportunities for development and future-directed perspectives, above all in the field of natural sciences and technology.
