Bachelor’s Programme Mechanical Engineering
TU Wien attempts to support prospective students in their decision making phase for their studies, while ensuring the high and internationally recognized quality of their studies and teaching.
As of the winter semester 2019/20, there will be either admission or selection procedures (for bachelor's programmes with limited places) for all bachelor's programmes at TU Wien or a study preparation and reflection phase (PRe phase) for bachelor's programmes without place restrictions.

The Faculty of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering is particularly interested in encouraging students from general and vocational colleges to study mechanical engineering. In this field, it is essential that the economy and the sciences finally recognise and make full use of the talents and abilities of young women. Modern mechanical engineering requires brains, not muscles, and the (too) few female students of Mechanical Engineering generally achieve above-average degree results.
An interest in technical and scientific systems and processes as well as an affinity for mathematical methods and analytical procedures are the ideal prerequisites for studying mechanical engineering. Since nowadays computer tools are used in all types of tasks connected with the development of innovative products and processes, an interest in this field is also necessary.
The course imparts a sound knowledge of mathematics as well as engineering and science, which form the basis for an understanding of the relationships relevant to mechanical engineering. Mastering these scientific basic principles and methods is, along with a sound knowledge in the field of information and communication technology, a prerequisite for a successful career in any of the subdivisions of mechanical engineering as well as for gaining further qualifications through an appropriate master's programme.
The facilities of the Faculty of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, including study areas and laboratory equipment, are modern and forward-thinking. The course is not currently oversubscribed and there are plenty of free spaces for all lectures, tutorials, laboratory sessions and seminars.
Career prospects are outstanding. In the coming years, a lack of mechanical engineering graduates is actually predicted. Job prospects are varied and range from engineering in the field of industrial research and development, academic work at universities or other research institutions, working as a plant engineer in medium-sized to large companies, as a safety engineer in a power plant, as a test engineer or designer in the automotive industry, working in an engineering company or as an independent civil engineer, as head of internal advanced training in a large company or as a teacher in a vocational college or even setting up a new company. The broad foundational knowledge imparted by a degree in Mechanical Engineering remains relevant for many years and enables graduates to understand modern problems quickly and thoroughly and develop successful solutions.
Successfully completing the bachelor's programme Mechanical Engineering (E 033 245) enables the student to continue studying directly with the master's courses in Mechanical Engineering (E 066 445) or Material Sciences (E 066 434). For other courses, students' suitability will be assessed by the respective responsible body.
