FAQ on the Study Start Grant
Below is an overview of the answers to all key questions regarding the Study Start Grant.
The application period runs from March 2 to August 10, 2026. The application process is entirely online. Early application is highly recommended.
You do not need to have completed Matura at the time of application. The only requirement is that you plan to start your studies at TU Wien in autumn 2026.
A positive notice for the Study Start Grant is not yet required when applying. However, this document must be submitted by autumn 2026.

Academic performance is considered "good" or "very good" if upper secondary school was completed with "good success" (gutem Erfolg) or "distinction" (ausgezeichnetem Erfolg) in all annual report cards. This is determined by the official definitions pursuant to Section 22, Paragraphs 7 and 8 of the Austrian School Organization Act (Schulunterrichtsgesetz – SchUG).
No, the grant does not have to be paid back. However, payouts for the second semester will be stopped if you do not achieve the required 16 ECTS credits during your first semester.
The final decision is made by the Austrian Student Scholarship Authority (Studienbeihilfebehörde) through the issuance of an official positive notice.

Yes. You can apply between March 2 and August 10, 2026. After that, you can apply for the student grant at the Austrian Student Scholarship Authority (Studienbeihilfebehörde) starting September 20. As soon as you receive your official positive notice (Bescheid), please submit it to us.
Payouts will begin in October 2026, as soon as your official positive notice (Bescheid) for the student grant has been submitted. If there is a delay in receiving this notice, the payout of the funding will also be postponed. In this case, once the proof is provided, the grant will be paid out retroactively from that point onward.
Yes. However, you must have successfully completed Matura and be officially admitted to a degree program at TU Wien by the start of the winter semester 2026 (October 2026).
In the application form, you can specify your expected start date. Please select the corresponding semester. If you plan to start your studies after the winter semester 2026, we will register you as an interested candidate and contact you again for the next call for applications. Please note that for the current call of the Study Start Grant (Studienstartförderung), we can only consider applicants who are beginning their studies in the winter semester 2026.
For students who are starting a bachelor's degree program for the very first time and are officially admitted at TU Wien.
All students who graduate with a Matura in Austria are eligible to apply.
