Vienna has an outstanding public transportation network, which includes night buses during the week and 24-hour subway service on weekends. It is operated by the Wiener Linien, opens an external URL in a new window and we recommend that you get the WienMobil App for your smartphone.

If you are studying in Vienna but will not stay for a full year, the following tickets allow unlimited travel on subway, tram, and bus within the Vienna core zone.

Excluded: Special express buses (e.g., airport buses).

Within the core zone, ÖBB trains (e.g., S-Bahn) and Wiener Lokalbahnen (up to Vösendorf-Siebenhirten) are also included.

  1. 31-Day Ticket VIENNA (Digital): You can buy it for every month of your stay in the WienMobil Ticketshop or via the WienMobil App.
  2. Annual Pass VIENNA Youth (‘Jahreskarte WIEN Jugend’, not Jugendticket or Top-Jugendticket – these are different products) available as a digital pass on your smartphone or as a physical card.

The annual pass VIENNA Youth is normally valid for 12 months, but it can be cancelled after 7 months of validity. In that case, you only pay for the months the pass has actually been used.
Important: This option is cheaper, but it involves a cancellation process that some may find complicated. Please read the instructions carefully.

Cancellation Options:

Cancellation after 12 months:

Annual Pass VIENNA Youth (physical card):

  • One-time payment in advance:
If you pay for your annual pass upfront, your contract ends automatically when the pass expires. If you do not want a new annual pass after this, you do not need to take any action.
  • Payment by account debit:
If you pay via automatic account debit and do not want a new annual pass after your current one expires, you must inform Wiener Linien in writing at least one month before the pass expires. Your annual pass will then be ended free of charge at the end of its validity.

Annual Pass VIENNA Youth (digital):

  • The digital annual pass can be cancelled independently by the holder up to one week before expiration via the WienMobil App or the WienMobil Ticketshop.

Cancellation after 7 – 11 months:

Annual Pass VIENNA Youth (physical card):

  • To cancel, the physical annual pass must be returned in person at one of the Wiener Linien Info & Ticket offices. Instead, you will receive a ‘final card’, which allows use of public transport until the last day of validity.
  • After cancellation, you will receive a refund for the remaining months of the prepaid contract. A fare compensation fee (one month) is retained. If you have a SEPA bank account, the remaining balance can be transferred to you. Your IBAN is required for the bank transfer. If you do not have a SEPA bank account, please collect your refund at a Info & Ticket office in cash. We recommend the ticket office at Wien Karlsplatz as it is very close to TU Wien and staff there have experience with exchange students.

Annual Pass VIENNA Youth (digital):

  • If you plan to cancel your annual card after 7 months and do not have a SEPA bank account, please do not choose the digital annual pass. A digital pass cannot be cancelled at a counter with a cash refund.
  • If you have a SEPA Bank account: Cancellations must be performed directly in the WienMobil Ticketshop. If you’ve chosen the monthly payment option, the fare compensation fee is debited from your account.
