Austrian data strategy published

The strategy is intended to create a framework for a flourishing data economy without neglecting the protection of personal data.

The data strategy for Austria, opens an external URL in a new window was published on October 2, 2024, following a final political consultation. It is based on the objectives of the European Data Strategy and the Data Governance Act (DGA). To do justice to the rapid developments in the data sector, it is defined as an adaptive strategy that is open to changes, additions, and clarifications.

The strategy promotes a proactive data culture in strict compliance with data protection regulations and follows the vision of “using data for the benefit of society”. To realise this vision, it pursues three goals:

  • GOAL 1: Develop sustainable data infrastructures and technical solutions for efficient data exchange
  • GOAL 2: Activate potentials for responsible data sharing
  • GOAL 3: Establish an innovative data culture and increase data literacy

An overview of the key measures for implementing the objectives mentioned above can be found in the executive summary of the data strategy.

In addition to the data strategy, the Datenzugangsgesetz (DZG), opens an external URL in a new window will be an essential component for regulating the use of data in Austria. It implements the content of the European Data Governance Act (DGA) at a national level and is currently available for review as a draft.
