Mónika Farsang is completing her doctoral studies at the Institute of Computer Engineering at TU Wien under the supervision of Univ.Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Dr.rer.nat. Dr.h.c.mult. Radu Grosu. Her research focuses on artificial intelligence, with particular emphasis on liquid neural networks – a novel, bio-inspired neural network architecture originally developed at TU Wien.

Her doctoral research addresses a growing but often overlooked challenge of modern AI: its environmental footprint. The increasing use of AI is accompanied by substantial computational demands and rising energy consumption. Her work therefore aims to develop neural network models that are more efficient, scalable, and interpretable, while maintaining their predictive capabilities. In particular, she develops compact liquid neural networks for embedded and edge applications, including robotics and autonomous systems, enabling AI to operate on resource-constrained hardware with reduced computational and energy requirements.

A second focus of her research is enabling liquid neural networks to scale to long-sequence prediction tasks and large-scale AI systems. By developing new architectural approaches, her work bridges two very different scales of application – from energy-efficient AI on embedded devices to scalable neural architectures for large computational systems. Treating computational efficiency and energy consumption as fundamental design objectives, rather than secondary considerations, her research contributes to the development of AI systems that are both technically capable and environmentally responsible.

The Lions Prize will support Mónika Farsang in presenting her research at international conferences and contribute to the costs of her ongoing research visit at MIT, strengthening an international collaboration that will contribute to the final stages of her doctoral research.
