What about Equality?
Survey on experiences of discrimination and the perception of institutions and measures related to equal treatment and gender equality at the Faculty of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at TU Wien
Background of the Study
Promoting equality and diversity, as well as creating fair and inclusive conditions within the faculty, are among femTUme’s core priorities. This led us to ask: What challenges actually exist, and what changes do faculty members perceive as necessary?
To thoroughly investigate these questions, we decided to conduct a faculty-wide survey. Only by bringing challenges, experiences, and perceptions to light can we develop effective long-term measures and initiate targeted changes. It was particularly important to us to involve all faculty members in order to gain a comprehensive picture of perceptions, experiences, and attitudes.
Concept and Survey
In collaboration with FORBA, the Working Life Research Centre , a structured questionnaire was developed that is organized into the following five thematic areas, thereby enabling a nuanced analysis of perceptions and experiences within the faculty:
- Well-being, sense of belonging, and equality at the faculty
- Experiences with discrimination at the faculty
- Gender and Academia
- Equality Measures
- Future in Academia and Research
Results
Early results from the study were presented at the 2026 femTUme Women’s Research Congress. The full report will be published here shortly.
A summary of the key survey findings is available for download below.
In a faculty-wide open event on June 17, 2026, the results will be presented and followed by a panel discussion. Current information about the event can be found here.
