The routine development of biomedical devices (organ support, drug delivery, artificial lung/kidney) requires flexible testing of mass transfer with low priming volumes, mostly done using life animal experiments, associated with ethical concerns and low reproducibility.

A platform kit is proposed which allows quick and reproducible in-vitro testing of materials and/or membranes with low priming volumes, flexible for liquid/gas, liquid/liquid and gas/gas transfer. Accompanied by laser-based experimental fluid dynamics and CFD, best geometric designs will be proposed to minimize and/or control boundary layers, reduce concentration polarization effects and minimize fluidic residence time distribution for more accurate measurements.

With flexible and easy adjustment of geometry, substance concentrations and boundary conditions this novel platform will also provide a contribution towards personalized medicine.
