Project Description

Steel fiber reinforced concrete represents a promising alternative to conventionally reinforced concrete. While its static load-bearing behavior has already been extensively studied, its fatigue behavior under cyclic loading — for instance due to traffic, wind, or machinery-induced loads — has not yet been sufficiently investigated. As appropriate verification methods and testing procedures are currently lacking, existing standards do not yet account for the contribution of steel fibers to fatigue strength.

The aim of the project is to develop suitable concrete mix designs and to conduct experimental investigations on both small-scale and large-scale structural specimens in order to identify the governing failure mechanisms of fiber-reinforced concrete under fatigue loading.

Based on the experimental results obtained, a design concept including the limits of applicability of fiber-reinforced concrete will be derived. This will provide the necessary scientific basis for a future normative regulation on the topic.

The project is funded by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) under the funding program BRIDGE 2025/01. Further information can be found here: FATIFIB, opens an external URL in a new window
