Youth Hostel on a Steep Slope

Every structure carries weight – especially when a building is meant to defy gravity. The relationship between construction, material use, and embodied energy is not a side issue of sustainability, but one of the fundamental design levers in planning new buildings.

In this project, you will develop an integral building concept distinguished by innovative, prototypical solutions in architectural, structural, and energy-related terms.

The task is the design of a new youth hostel at the Erpeler Ley – a historic basalt outcrop on the Rhine.

The use of BIM, FEM, and parametric optimisation forms the basis for integrated collaboration and solution-finding.

At the end of the course, the projects will be submitted to the VDI Integral Planning Competition. Previous cohorts from TU Wien have already received numerous nominations and awards.
