About the Research Project

An integrated XR platform for university teaching of the future

Digitalisation is fundamentally changing the educational landscape. Technologies such as augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) offer new ways of conveying complex content in a clear, interactive and risk-free manner. However, despite its potential, the use of extended reality (XR) in university teaching has so far hardly been structurally established.

XR in Teaching is an innovative project at TU Wien that systematically integrates immersive technologies into academic education by developing a university-wide XR roadmap, practical teaching scenarios and an interdisciplinary learning platform. The aim is to strengthen digital literacy, create interactive learning environments and prepare students for the demands of Industry 4.0.

Why XR in teaching?

  • XR enables risk-free learning in realistic, immersive environments.
  • Interactive VR/AR scenarios promote deep understanding and action-oriented learning.
  • The systematic integration of XR into study programmes is still largely unestablished.
  • Key digital skills are developed in a targeted manner – for future-oriented education.

Project

Teaching at universities is facing a paradigm shift – from static knowledge transfer to dynamic, digital learning formats. XR in teaching closes the existing gap between technological potential and didactic application:

  • Development of a university-wide XR roadmap for structural integration into study programmes
  • Development of best practice teaching scenarios for the application of AR/VR in different subject areas
  • Creation of an integrated knowledge platform for students and teachers
  • Promoting interdisciplinary collaboration through immersive learning environments

Vision

XR in teaching is more than a digital teaching project – it is a forward-looking contribution to the further development of university teaching. It combines technology, research and educational expertise in a university-wide ecosystem and positions TU Wien as a pioneer of modern teaching in the digital age.
