BIMd.sign – BIM digitally signed with blockchain in the planning phase

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is considered a key technology for digital transformation in the construction industry. However, despite its increasing use in planning practice, interdisciplinary collaboration and transparent data exchange often fall short of their potential. Traditional, sequential workflows dominate, and BIM models are often used in isolation and out of sync.

BIMd.sign addresses this issue: The project is developing a novel, holistic framework for digitally signed and automated process control based on BIM and blockchain – with the aim of making model-based planning transparent, secure and traceable.

Why BIMd.sign?

  • Linking BIM workflows with blockchain technology for end-to-end digital, secure planning.
  • Smart contracts enable the automated control and documentation of planning steps.
  • Interdisciplinary processes become synchronised, transparent and tamper-proof.
  • Development of a cross-border framework for use in the planning, construction and operation of building and infrastructure projects.

Project description

BIMd.sign takes an integrated approach: it combines BIM models with blockchain-based smart contracts to digitally secure and automate information flows, responsibilities and decisions in the planning process.

The innovative methodology makes it possible to make the collaboration of all parties involved in the digital model legally binding, version-secure and transparent – from design to construction to operation.

The project is part of a transnational research network between Austria and Germany. The aim is to create a joint BIM blockchain framework that supports the digital value creation process in the construction industry across national borders.

Vision

BIMd.sign paves the way for a new generation of integrated planning processes. By combining model-based planning with blockchain technology, it creates a transparent, tamper-proof and automated basis for the digital construction industry – as a foundation for innovation, trust and efficiency throughout the entire building life cycle.
