The dramatic housing shortage is leading to protest and new housing policy movements and initiatives in many cities. They stand in a long tradition of activism and self-organisation. Their critique and demands are mainly related to concrete manifestations of neoliberal housing policies, deregulation and financialisation. The current issue of the Forschungsjournal Soziale Bewegungen presents current housing policy movements. The focus is on concrete solutions for an alternative organisation of housing as well as conceptual and strategic questions about the influence of social movements on housing policy and the conflictual to cooperative relationship between social movements and the political-administrative system. The thematic focus was curated by Lisa Vollmer (Uni Weimar), Gabriele Schmidt (SRL) and Simon Güntner (TU Wien).
