Ariane Sept has been a university professor of spatial sociology at the Faculty of Spatial Planning and Architecture at TU Wien since February 2026. Prior to this, she held the professorship for Participatory Community Development and Community Work at the Faculty of Applied Social Sciences at Munich University of Applied Sciences from 2022 and worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Leibniz Institute for Spatial Social Research in Erkner near Berlin and as a lecturer at the BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg from 2018 to 2022. After previously working as a freelancer in urban research and communication, she was a doctoral candidate in the DFG Research Training Group ‘Innovation Society Today’ at the Institute of Sociology at the Technical University of Berlin from 2015 to 2018.

Ariane Sept received her doctorate in sociology from the Technical University of Berlin in 2018 with a thesis on "Deceleration in Small and Medium-Sized Towns. Cittaslow as a social innovation in urban development." She obtained her diploma in urban and regional planning in 2006 at the TU Berlin with a thesis on the European URBAN programme in Italian urban planning.
