Spatial planner Dipl. Ing. Isabel Stumfol grew up in the Enns Valley (Styria). Her research and teaching activities are based at the Centre for Rural Space within the Faculty of Architecture and Spatial Planning. She is also self-employed (e.g. for the Baukulturregion Alpenvorland, opens an external URL in a new window). Among other activities, she was able to gain practical experience in a planning office, where she was responsible for citizen participation processes, both in conception and implementation. During her studies she already focused on rural areas (e.g. in her diploma thesis „Land ohne Töchter*", opens an external URL in a new window). Not only does she investigate and work on the potentials and challenges of rural areas as a spatial planner, but they are directly tangible for her as a multi-local living and working person (urban and rural). Her time as a freelance journalist in a regional office has made her more aware of this. In her dissertation, she interweaves all her experiences while dealing with storytelling in planning. Her practice and research focuses are vibrant rural life, digitalisation, storytelling („Geschichten vom Land“, opens an external URL in a new window), multilocality, ideas, creativity and innovation processes for rural areas, project management, process design and qualitative research methods. Since March 2019, Isabel Stumfol has been a board member of „LandLuft“, opens an external URL in a new window (association for the promotion of building culture in rural areas). From May 2019, she has also been chairwoman of the Korona Mai, opens an external URL in a new window association, which, among other things, runs a co-working space in a former hospital.
