Researching the city, researching in the city, understanding the city, analysing it and making connections: Many disciplines are dedicated to the city, sometimes with different research perspectives.

In urban and spatial sociology, human and social geography, urban studies, ethnology, urban and spatial planning, economics and political sciences as well as social work, "the city" or certain phenomena in the city are researched. In addition to various disciplinary approaches, this is increasingly taking place in an interdisciplinary manner. But also transdisciplinary, in cooperation with actors from civil society, the economy and spatial politics and administration.

The lecture series will allow students from different fields of study to look "beyond their own disciplinary and scientific horizons" and to get to know different approaches and research methods of urban research. The lecture series will cover comparative, quantitative, qualitative, mixed methods, artistic and participatory approaches. A wide variety of approaches and research methods will be addressed using different examples from the research or planning practice of the invited experts.

The lectures offer an opportunity to follow up on the lecture series of the same name in the winter semester 2019/20 and summer semester 2021, this time exploring methodologies and research methods for recording and understanding urban phenomena and spatial issues. The lecturers with different disciplinary and institutional backgrounds are active in the network of the Urban Research Section of the Austrian Sociological Association and/or renowned experts in the field of urban and spatial research.
