Working together to strengthen cycling culture at TU Wien – linking infrastructure, research, and teaching

With cycleFIT, TU Wien is establishing a living lab that explores barriers, potentials, and measures related to cycling to and at the university. The project follows a data-driven and participatory approach, connecting research, teaching, and practice.

In the first phase, the team is documenting the current situation, including bicycle parking facilities, shower infrastructure, and other cycling-related services. At the same time, feedback is being collected on everyday barriers that prevent people from using bicycles more often. cycleFIT has an ambitious goal: to make TU Wien bike-friendly within the next two years.

A key component of cycleFIT is the integrated course cycleFIT: Sustainable Mobility at TU Wien,” which has already started successfully. Students from the programmes Spatial Planning, Civil Engineering, and Environmental Engineering work together with lecturers from several research units, including Land Policy and Land Management, Transport Systems Planning, and Transport Planning and Traffic Engineering, to develop concepts and prototypes for a bike-friendly TU Wien.

Kick-off with a joint bike tour

On 14 October, the first joint bike tour took place, visiting several TU Wien locations. During the tour, existing infrastructure was reviewed and valuable insights were provided by the Building and Technology Services (GUT) department. Many thanks for the support and the informative exchange!
