TUWEL Update 5.2

On August 18, 2026, TUWEL, the Vienna University of Technology’s central e-learning platform, was updated to the latest version of Moodle, 5.2. Here is an overview of some key facts.

New Grade Levels

TISS uses the following grades: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, E, or O. These grades stand for very good (1), good (2), satisfactory (3), sufficient (4), insufficient (5), successfully completed (E), and not successfully completed (O). To ensure that TISS and TUWEL now use the same grading scale, the standard grade levels in TUWEL have been adjusted

Numerous new features in the freehand drawing tool

At the beginning of the year, TU Wien took over maintenance of the plugin from ETH Zurich and added numerous new features to the existing implementation. The goal of these developments was to optimize the drawing options for online exams in digital exam rooms. In addition to usability improvements—such as optimizing the full-screen function and defining the default size of the drawing pen—additional helpful features were developed for instructors. Assignment: Allow for multiple evaluators

In the new version of the assignment, it is now possible to have each student submission graded by two or more graders. To use this feature, the assignment’s “grading workflow” must be enabled. The individual grades from the graders can be aggregated in three ways: manual grading (no calculation), highest grade, or average grade.

New Landing Page and Navigation Improvements

The home page has been optimized and now features a two-column layout with a fresh new look. At the top of each activity, students can see the deadline or completion status at a glance. The course index on the left-hand side has also been expanded.

What's New on the Forum

The “Question-Answer Forum” forum type now includes a new feature that supports “real-time” teaching scenarios. When the “Show other answers immediately after submission” setting is enabled, answers from other students are displayed without the processing delay (of 5–30 minutes). They are displayed immediately.

Anonymous Student Folders

Numerous accessibility improvements have been implemented in the Student Folder. In the new version, it is now also possible to anonymize file submissions. Instructors can choose whether to hide the names of students or groups, or the date of the last edit (“Last Modified”). These features can be enabled in the module settings under the “Publication Settings” section.
