The first volume of the “Space & Gender” series explores the potential of queer feminist perspectives to redefine architectural history and challenge patriarchal structures in planning. The contributions from academics, activists and practitioners call for a broader understanding of architecture as a social and political construct that extends beyond its physical preservation. They offer alternative historiographical approaches and critical analyses that challenge dominant narratives and create space for diverse memories. Particular focus is placed on places that have been marginalised by patriarchal power relations. Student projects from TU Wien illustrate the practical application of queer feminist theories in design. The bilingual contributions foster an interdisciplinary dialogue that challenges conventional knowledge and inspires new approaches to the remembrance, preservation and design of architecture.
