The Research Unit of Building Materials and Material Technology at the Institute of Materials Technology, Building Physics and Building Ecology at TU Wien organized a field excursion to the Bregenzerwald region to explore current developments in regional craftsmanship and material-related production processes firsthand. The excursion was planned and coordinated by Carolin Lotz-Ramirez.

The group visited several companies and institutions that exemplify the successful integration of traditional knowledge, innovative technologies, and regional value creation:

• Werkraum Bregenzerwald – Insights into contemporary design, regional material culture, and the collaboration between craftspeople and architects.
• O&S Bau – Presentation of advanced concrete processing, ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC), and current manufacturing technologies.
• Zimmerei Kaufmann – Demonstration of modern timber construction methods, digital fabrication processes, and structural detailing.
• LehmTonErde – Introduction to earthen construction, including material samples, production processes, and examples from research and practice.
• Dorfsennerei Schlins – Insight into artisanal food production as an example of regional production chains and value creation.

The excursion provided a comprehensive overview of regional building culture, material-related innovation, and craftsmanship. Through direct exchange with professionals from various trades and disciplines, participants gained valuable insights that will contribute to future research activities and professional practice.
