This lecture will address various recent developments in the design of foundation systems of different mega structures like nuclear building, oil tanks, sea bridge, tall buildings etc. The advances considering sustainability aspects of foundation design to be brought in to the discussion. The theory applied to major infrastructure projects in India will be highlighted. In the 1st mega project, the foundation design aspects will be discussed for India’s longest sea bridge (21.8 km long) in Mumbai, namely, Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) or “ATAL SETU”, which was opened on 12th January 2024 by Hon’ble Prime Minister of India at Mumbai. Various critical aspects of “Atal Setu” – longest sea bridge foundations for package 1 through water will be thoroughly mentioned as exercised with application of knowledge to the practical case till the stage of constructions. For 2nd mega project of new NPP founded in a fully soil-site in Haryana will be discussed in terms of site-specific geotechnical challenges. The effective use of combined pile-raft foundation (CPRF) with the connection to the international applications will be highlighted. For 3rd mega project of India’s largest POL terminal at Motihari, the several geotechnical challenges including high seismicity area-based soil liquefaction and remedies through ground improvements will be addressed. The foundation design of oil tanks and mounded storage vessels (MSV) including seismic aspects and monitoring will be used for the site. Through these mega infrastructures, the recent methods, and practical applications of such advances in disaster resilient foundation design will be elaborated.
