Hydrogen research is one of the key areas for the energy and mobility solutions of the future. To fully harness the potential of this energy source, state-of-the-art research facilities and the highest safety standards are essential. Due to its specific properties – in particular its high flammability and rapid spread in the air – handling hydrogen requires careful planning and comprehensive safety measures.
A holistic safety concept forms the basis for safe and efficient research operations. This includes high-performance ventilation systems, gas detection devices and explosion-proof facilities, as well as regular training, clear work instructions, suitable protective equipment and documented testing procedures. These measures ensure that potential hazards can be identified at an early stage and risks effectively minimised.
An important milestone has now been reached at the Getreidemarkt location: in collaboration with researchers from the Faculty of Technical Chemistry, a comprehensive safety concept has been developed and the central hydrogen supply system in the BB wing has successfully gone into operation. This provides a modern, safe and high-performance infrastructure that creates the ideal conditions for innovative research projects and scientific excellence in the field of hydrogen.
With the successful launch of the central hydrogen supply system, TU Wien is taking another step towards safe, cutting-edge research and innovative energy technologies of the future.
