The "Gehzeug"

Last Friday evening, the Long Night of Research 2026 took place across Austria, the country’s largest science event. For the first time, the cycleFIT team was also part of it, offering a diverse program with interactive hands-on stations at TU Wien.

Visitors were able to actively participate and become part of the research: In a modal split survey, they recorded their own travel behavior, while a bike mapping activity allowed them to pinpoint problem areas in Vienna’s cycling network directly on a map. Another interactive format invited visitors to guess what can actually be transported by cargo bike, an activity that led to quite a few surprises.

A special highlight of the evening was the “Gehzeug,” developed by Professor Knoflacher. This wooden frame makes the space occupied by a car in public areas visible and tangible. Many visitors took the opportunity to try it out themselves and quickly realized how much space a car actually requires and how unusual it feels to move through space with it.

The evening passed quickly, shaped by many engaging conversations and inspiring encounters. The strong interest in cycleFIT and the positive feedback encourage the team to further develop the project and continue the dialogue on sustainable mobility at TU Wien.

A big thank you to everyone who stopped by, took part, and joined in. We look forward to seeing you again at the next Long Night of Research!
