Research Data Management without borders

TU Wien is driving better research data practices – from Central Asia to Europe and beyond.

Central Asia

Beginning of June 2026, TU Wien sent a delegation consisting of Andreas Rauber, Florina Piroi, and Maximilian Moser to Kyrgyzstan to assist in the development of good Research Data Management practices and services. They visited the Kyrgyz State Technical University (KSTU) in Bishkek and Naryn State University (NSU) in Naryn. During our visit to KSTU and NSU, we introduced the Data Science Process and the Research Data Management phases, highlighting the close connections between them. This demonstrated the benefits of having data repositories as a key building block of the data analytics processes.

We presented the TU Wien Research Data Repository to a larger audience from different faculties of KSTU. In these presentations, we explained the workflows currently in place at TU Wien and showcased the ease of uploading and documenting datasets. Further, we demonstrated the review process and its benefits for increased quality and visibility of research outputs.

Europe

Of course, our focus is not only on Central Asia. Back home in Europe, we've also helped other universities improve their Research Data Management practices, e.g., by assisting with questions about InvenioRDM. The University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU) in Vienna has started setting up its own instance of InvenioRDM, where our team assisted by sharing some of the knowledge we've gathered over time. The State Academy of Fine Arts (ABK) in Stuttgart also contacted us with some questions that we're glad to answer! And of course, as always, we still continue to contribute to the upstream development of InvenioRDM with CERN and the other community members.

Worldwide

Around the same time as the Kyrgyzstan visit, this year's edition of the worldwide Open Repositories conference was held online. Since we still haven't achieved the technology to be in several places at the same time, Max provided a pre-recorded presentation for Open Repositories this year. The presentation was shown at the beginning of the InvenioRDM workshop on the first day of the conference. In it, Max showed some customisations possible within InvenioRDM and that it is feasible to achieve the CoreTrustSeal certification with it, showcasing TU Wien Research Data as an example. The aim of the presentation was to demonstrate the flexibility of InvenioRDM as a base platform and serve as inspiration to others. Although our team was unfortunately not present to verify that, it was stated that the presentation was generally well received by the audience.
