8,808 universities were evaluated in the recently published 2027 World University Rankings by the international higher education analyst Quacquarelli Symonds. Only 1,504 of them made it into the prestigious ranking.
Good news for TU Wien: Ranked 191st, it once again made it into the top 200 universities worldwide and came in second among Austrian universities, behind the University of Vienna, which improved its ranking to 140th. Overall, according to QS, Austria has made greater gains in the university rankings this time than any other European country. This positive development, which is the result of long-term strategic efforts, is now being severely jeopardized by the Austrian government’s announced budget cuts.
However, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) (USA) once again tops the list, followed in second place by Imperial College London (UK), tied on points with Stanford University (USA), which has moved up in the rankings; the University of Oxford (UK) holds fourth place.
Detailed Results for TU Wien
TU Wien has moved up six places compared to last year and achieved an overall score of 56.7. In terms of individual indicators, it has improved in the areas of “International Faculty” (181, +30), “Employer Reputation” (188, +23), “Academic Reputation” (229, +17), and “Employment Outcomes” (517, +52). The improvement in reputation factors demonstrates that TU Wien is gaining international visibility and is thus successfully implementing Strategic Goal No. 2—“to systematically increase TU Wien’s scientific leadership and international visibility.” The consistently excellent results in employer reputation also demonstrate that Strategic Goal No. 1 is being maintained at the highest level: to continue developing an attractive and performance-enhancing environment for all members of the university community.
