James L. Garrison, Professor at Purdue University and pioneer of Global Navigation Satellite System Reflectometry (GNSS-R), is a Global Fellow at the Department of Geodesy and
Geoinformation (Faculty of Mathematics and Geoinformation) for the 2026/27 winter semester.

During his visit, Prof. Garrison will teach a course introducing GNSS-R methods and collaborate with colleagues to apply physics-informed machine learning to data from reflected navigation
signals. The goal is to improve retrievals of land surface parameters such as soil moisture, flood and vegetation - including from ESA's recently launched HydroGNSS mission - using "signals
of opportunity" from upcoming Earth observation satellites.

The visit is of relevance well beyond remote sensing: it benefits the entire GEO department.
