New Scientific Contributions to the Analysis of Travel Behaviour

From validating automated travel mode detection to storytelling with mobility data: Three new publications with contributions from MOVE have recently been published.

How can large amounts of mobility tracking and mobile phone data be used effectively for research and transport planning? Three recent scientific publications emerging from the aspern.mobil LAB and the MultiMoFusion research project address exactly this question.

Ex-post validation of automated travel mode detection based on spatial-infrastructural and traffic-regulatory modal filters

This paper focuses on the quality of automated travel mode detection in tracking applications. It presents a method for retrospectively assessing and validating travel mode classifications provided by external service providers using spatial, infrastructural, and traffic-regulatory characteristics. From Data to Narrative: Storymaps Using Spatiotemporal Travel Behaviour Data

This paper explores the communication and visualisation of mobility data. It discusses the cartographic challenges associated with highly detailed spatiotemporal datasets and highlights the potential of storymaps for presenting complex travel behaviour patterns in an accessible and engaging way. The work was carried out within the aspern.mobil LAB and the MultiMoFusion research project.

Travel behaviour Data Fusion Model based on APP-based survey and floating phone data

Another contribution, developed jointly with TU Graz within the framework of MultiMoFusion, focuses on the integration of different mobility data sources. The paper presents the data fusion model developed in MultiMoFusion, which combines information from app-based mobility surveys (SMASI) with Floating Phone Data (FPD). The aim is to leverage the strengths of both datasets and thereby obtain a more comprehensive picture of travel behaviour.

The papers were previously presented by our colleagues Magdalena Bürbaumer, Florian Pühringer, and Martin Berger at the 13th International Conference on Transport Survey Methods (ISCTSC 2025) in Da Nang, where they were discussed with members of the international research community.
