Together with Johanna Karl and Lorenz Siegel from the Vienna Mobility Agency, the students explored various cycling infrastructure projects in Vienna by bike.

The route covered long-established infrastructure such as the cycle path on Margaretenstraße, as well as recently completed projects such as the Radhighway Nord, the cycle lane on Pfeilgasse and the newly redesigned section along the Danube Canal on the Freda-Meissner-Blau Promenade. Planned projects, such as the redesign of the Ring Cycle Path, were also discussed. The participants gained fascinating insights into the planning processes and discussed the strengths and challenges of Vienna’s cycling infrastructure together.

The excursion highlighted just how complex the development of modern cycle paths is. Various requirements, collaboration between several municipal departments, and the involvement of local stakeholders all play a central role. Added to this are the specific conditions of each individual project and the challenge of ensuring an overarching network of cycling infrastructure across Vienna.
