From 6 to 10 July 2026, Magdalena Bürbaumer and Gunnar Grandel from Research Unit Transportation System Planning (MOVE) attended the World Planning Schools Conference (WPSC) at Aalto University in Helsinki. The conference brought together researchers from the field of international urban and spatial planning.
Magdalena Bürbaumer presented research findings from the EU Horizon project TRACE and outlined a GIS-based assessment framework for urban infrastructure in relation to pavement delivery robots. The method is based primarily on publicly available geodata, in particular OpenStreetMap, and can therefore be easily adapted to other cities. The aim is to create a transparent basis for discussion regarding the potential use of delivery robots. Among other things, this allows for an examination of the urban areas that are already fundamentally suitable today, the existing infrastructural requirements, and how delivery robots can be integrated into existing logistics systems in the future.
Gunnar Grandel and Annag Aigner presented their paper on the topic of Urban Experimentation & Learning, which they had co-authored with Andreas Bernögger and Lena Hohenkamp. Using four case studies from Vienna – IBA Vienna, Klimateams, Transformator:in/Pilot Supergrätzl Favoriten and Galileigasse – the team examined how learning processes are structured in urban experiments. To this end, the researchers developed an analytical framework that systematically examines process design and learning activities, as well as the various learning outcomes and their long-term embedding.
