Long Night of Research

From bike mapping to the “Gehzeug,” cycleFIT brought sustainable mobility to life at the Long Night of Research 2026.

On April 24, the Long Night of Research 2026 took place across Austria, the country’s largest science event. For the first time, the cycleFIT team also participated, offering a diverse program with interactive hands-on activities at the TU Wien campus. CycleFIT is a real-world laboratory for cycling mobility at TU Wien. From the FoB Boden team, Kurt Weninger, opens an external URL in a new window and Laetita Boock, opens an external URL in a new window are part of the project’s core team.

Visitors were invited to actively participate and become part of the research themselves: during a modal split survey, participants recorded their own travel behavior, while the bike mapping activity allowed them to pinpoint problem areas in Vienna’s cycling network directly on a map. Another activity challenged visitors to guess what kinds of items can actually be transported using a cargo bike. The answers led to quite a few surprises.

One of the evening’s special highlights was the “Gehzeug,” developed by Professor Knoflacher. This wooden frame makes the amount of space occupied by a car in public areas both visible and tangible. Many visitors took the opportunity to try out the Gehzeug themselves and quickly realized how much space a car actually requires and how unusual it feels to move through space with it.

The evening passed quickly, shaped by numerous engaging conversations and exciting encounters. The strong interest in cycleFIT and the many positive responses encourage the team to continue developing the project ideas and to further promote dialogue on sustainable mobility at TU Wien.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who stopped by, joined in the guessing game, and participated. We look forward to seeing you again at the next Long Night of Research!
