On February 4, 2026, the Innsbruck Waste and Resource Day 2026 took place at the University of Innsbruck under the theme “Material flows in circular systems – challenges & opportunities, targets & contaminants.”
As part of the event, Helmut Rechberger gave a presentation on “Recycling rates and their implications.” The talk covered general considerations, different types of recycling rates, and their strengths and weaknesses. A practical example was used to discuss the assessment of minimum recycled content targets.
Key takeaway: Recycling rates are an important instrument for achieving circular economy goals. At the same time, they must be scientifically sound, evidence-based, and data-driven, and regularly reviewed to ensure their effectiveness.
Thanks to the organizers – ÖWAV and the University of Innsbruck – for the valuable exchange.
