Last week, the TU Wien Research Unit for Lightweight Design participated in the WCCM-ECCOMAS 2026 in Munich, one of the world’s leading conferences in the field of Computational Mechanics. The delegation included Stefanie Elgeti, Clemens Fricke, Lukas Freinberger, Fabian Key, Konstantin Key, Michael Kofler, Carina Meinke, Günther Obermair, Melanie Todt, and Nils Wunsch.

During the conference, the research unit presented its latest research in the fields of Computational Mechanics, simulation-driven design, lightweight design, optimization, and AI-supported engineering methods. The research covered innovative approaches for the development of sustainable lightweight structures, biomedical applications, and intelligent optimization techniques.

The research unit also played an active role in the scientific programme. Stefanie Elgeti co-organized the minisymposium Complex Fluid Flows in Engineering: Modeling, Simulation, and Optimization together with Fabian Key, as well as the minisymposium Design and Manufacturing of Functionally Graded Composites together with Konstantin Key.

Another highlight of the conference was the Young Researchers Activities, to whose organization Fabian Key contributed significantly. Featuring events such as a Science Slam, a Career Lunch, and several networking activities, the programme provided excellent opportunities for early-career researchers to exchange ideas and build international connections.

Beyond the scientific presentations, WCCM-ECCOMAS 2026 offered numerous opportunities to engage with colleagues from around the world, establish new collaborations, and discuss future research directions. The successful participation once again highlights the international visibility and strong global network of the TU Wien Research Unit for Lightweight Design.
