Building Materials Research Unit presents research on earthen materials at ICEC 2026

Research on waste-derived and plant-based materials for sustainable earthen construction was presented at the International Conference on Earthen Construction (ICEC 2026) in Lisbon

From 7 to 10 July 2026, Toni Bakovic, Clémence Bos and Teresa Liberto represented the Building Materials Research Unit at ICEC 2026 in Lisbon, Portugal. The conference brought together researchers and practitioners working on earthen construction, providing an opportunity to exchange knowledge and discuss current developments in the field.

Two contributions from the Building Materials Research Unit focused on innovative approaches to earthen materials and their reinforcement :

Toni Bakovic presented the research “Turning waste and plant-based materials into innovative earthen construction,” co-authored with Teresa Liberto.
Clémence Bos presented the poster “Characterization of plant-based ropes for loam products reinforcement” .

Participation in ICEC 2026 offered the team an excellent opportunity to exchange ideas with colleagues, discover inspiring research, and connect with the international earthen construction community. Alongside the fascinating research and inspiring discussions, the conference also offered the opportunity to experience some of the hospitality—and delicious food—that Lisbon has to offer.
