Reichenau an der Rax is not only a place for skiing or hiking, but also a great location to meet outside the office and reflect on one’s practices related to research data and outputs. Our colleagues Florina Piroi and Tomasz Miksa had the opportunity to accompany the incoming PhD students of the Vienna Doctoral College on Digital Humanism, opens an external URL in a new window on their working retreat in the mountains, to demonstrate how the best research can be sabotaged by poor research data management, and to present practical measures for improvement.
In a workshop-like setting, Tomasz and Florina introduced the participants to the FAIR principles. They explained how one’s own research benefits from a well-planned Data Management Plan and highlighted the pitfalls that arise when ethical and legal aspects are not considered during research execution. The almost 20 participants at the event were informed that data management is not only about compliance with funders’ reporting requirements, but also about strengthening their own research integrity and accountability.
