As part of the module ‘280.961 Fokus Raumplanung – Theorie und Praxis der Wohnungspolitik und Segregation: Gemeinschaftliches Wohnen’, students on the Master’s programme in Spatial Planning and Regional Development produced three short films on the topic of ‘communal living’ during the summer term. (Supervised by: Constance Weiser from the Gemeinsam Bauen & Wohnen, opens an external URL in a new window initiative, and Ariane Sept from the Research Unit Sociology)
The starting point was a series of interviews conducted by Ralf Aydt with residents of housing projects as part of the “INIzuFuß-Wanderung 2025”, opens an external URL in a new window.
The students transcribed, systematically coded and analysed this existing audiovisual material. On this basis, key themes and perspectives were identified, selected and edited together to form three independent short films.
The videos showcase different facets of communal living, illustrating a qualitative analytical process and creative approaches to video design: starting with existing video material of varying quality, coding and thematic consolidation were used to develop insights into the residents’ experiences and perspectives. The three films thus also serve as an example of how teaching, empirical social research and audiovisual knowledge transfer can be interlinked.
