This is about the village as a space of the future: Amid a mix of longing and crisis, we discuss how rural areas can become sustainable through smart building and planning practices, thoughtful transformation of existing structures, and genuine participation. The focus is on vacant properties and renovating existing buildings rather than building new ones, established structures and social relationships, affordable housing, and the realities of women’s lives. We ask: What actually distinguishes a village from a city? Is this distinction still relevant today—and what can cities and rural areas learn from each other? In light of the climate crisis, we’re searching for new perspectives and concrete models for living, working, and planning together in smaller communities.
