The transition towards greater sustainability is a key goal for Austria’s regions. However, successful implementation depends on how regions can translate abstract goals such as “circular economy” and “energy transition” into local contexts. In the new research project TECTOCC, SRF is investigating the role that cultural self-perceptions and established governance processes play in the regions in shaping how this translation takes place.

The research project launched on 1 December 2025 and will spend the next three years examining how transformation is understood and operationalised in the regions of East Tyrol and Ötscherland. At SRF, Johannes Suitner (project lead), Astrid Krisch, and Linda Buchberger are responsible for the project. The project partner is the Centre for Social Innovation, opens an external URL in a new window (ZSI). The research project is funded by the Climate and Energy Fund as part of the Austrian Climate Research Programme (ACRP).
